The Land Conservancy Opens Newest Preserve in Cattaraugus County
October 19, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy is thrilled to announce that it has opened its newest preserve, a spectacular 185-acre forest in Cattaraugus County: the Janet Gallogly Allegany Wildlands. Named after the co-founder of the Gallogly Family Foundation, the preserve is located near Allegany State Park, and it is home to a rich diversity of plants and animals. It also includes 2.1 miles of publicly accessible hiking trails.

The Riverline and BCAT to Unveil New Mural Near Future Moore Street Gateway
October 4, 2023: The Riverline is thrilled to unveil a new mural on the building at 44 Moore Street, next to the future home of The Riverline. The mural was created by members of the Youth Mural Club at Buffalo Center for Art & Technology (BCAT), who were chosen from among three finalists of The Riverline’s Community Arts Project by an Arts Advisory Committee. BCAT and their students received a $10,000 stipend to cover the costs associated with the work.
The Land Conservancy Names Marisa Riggi Executive Director
August 22, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy has named Marisa Riggi as its new Executive Director, effective immediately. Riggi has been the Land Conservancy’s Conservation Director since 2017, but she has also served as Acting Executive Director since June. Riggi, who grew up in Williamsville, received her B.A. from SUNY Geneseo and her M.S. in Natural Resources from the University of Vermont. After graduation, she spent five years at the Northeast Wilderness Trust in Montpelier, VT, including three years as Conservation Director.

The Land Conservancy Announces $100,000 matching gift to save the Floating Fen in Chautauqua County
July 11, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy is thrilled to announce a $100,000 matching gift to save the Floating Fen, an incredible 223-acre property adjacent to the College Lodge Forest in Chautauqua County, one of the newest Land Conservancy preserves. Every dollar donated to the Floating Fen will be matched, dollar for dollar. The Land Conservancy community has until December 31, 2023 to raise at least $925,000 to save the Floating Fen.

The Riverline to Showcase Finalists for Community Arts Program July 11th at Undergrounds Coffee House
July 7, 2023: The Riverline will hold a public event on July 11th at Undergrounds Coffee House in Buffalo's Old First Ward to unveil the three finalists’ proposed projects in their Community Arts Program, announced in May. The finalists are Cornelia Dohse-Peck, Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology (BCAT), and Saira Siddiqui (see artist bios in press release).
Senator Tim Kennedy, Congressman Brian Higgins Deliver New Funding for The Riverline Project
June 20, 2023: Senator Tim Kennedy (D-Buffalo) and Congressman Brian Higgins joined Michael Hughes, Chair of the NFTA’s Board of Commissioners, and The Riverline Director Jeff Lebsack on Tuesday to announce $225,000 in state funding for The Riverline project. The funds, which were championed by Senator Kennedy and ultimately approved in this year’s budget, provide the local 20% match of a $900,000 federal award that was announced in March 2022.

May 17, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy is thrilled to host renowned author Tony Hiss, one of the strongest advocates for land protection in the United States, to discuss his seminal book Rescuing the Planet: Protecting Half the Land to Heal the Earth. Given a recent sobering report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, protecting our forests couldn’t be more urgent.

The Land Conservancy Announces Plan to Save Chautauqua County Forest
January 13, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy has announced that it will raise funds this year to purchase an extraordinary 223-acre property adjacent to the College Lodge Forest near Fredonia. The Land Conservancy will assemble a Friends of the Floating Fen committee to help steer fundraising activities, and they encourage any individual interested in land conservation to reach out if they would like to join the committee. The community needs to raise $925,000 by December 31st.

January 5, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy is pleased to announce that it has officially purchased a spectacular 185-acre forest in Cattaraugus County. Named the Janet Gallogly Allegany Wildlands, it is located near Allegany State Park, and it is home to a rich diversity of plants and animals. Although it is not yet open to visitors, the Land Conservancy will soon build a walking trail system for the public to enjoy, keeping the forest open as a publicly accessible nature preserve.
The Land Conservancy Places Conservation Easement on Grand Island’s Alt Preserve
January 4, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy is thrilled to announce that it has permanently protected a 36-acre property in Grand Island, known as the Alt Preserve, with a conservation easement. The easement ensures that the land will never be developed. The Alt Preserve is located on Whitehaven Road near the Margery Gallogly Nature Sanctuary. It has grassland habitat and wooded wetlands, and is home to many grassland nesting birds, including Bobolinks, Savannah Sparrows, and Northern Harriers. Funding for the conservation easement comes from the Greenway Ecological Standing Committee.

The Land Conservancy and Providence Farm Collective Reach $2.3 million Fundraising Goal
January 3, 2023: The Western New York Land Conservancy and Providence Farm Collective (PFC) are thrilled to announce that they have reached their joint fundraising goal of $2.3 million to “Plant the Future of Farming” in Western New York. PFC will now be able to purchase the farm in Orchard Park, while the Land Conservancy will place a conservation easement on it, keeping it farmland forever.
