Earth Day Water Walk
Friday, April 21, 2017 beginning at 6pm with a potluck and community events
Saturday, April 22, 2017 beginning at 6am with a ceremony, walk then potluck to follow

The Cattaraugus Water Walkerz group invites the public to join them on their Earth Day journey to honor our Cattaraugus Creek. Participants will walk, run, or kayak to transport water from their starting location (West Valley Demonstration Project) to the mouth of Cattaraugus Creek at Sunset Bay. A sunrise ceremony will be held at 6am and a water ceremony will be held at the mouth of the creek at Sunset. The walk will be followed by a potluck and community sharing time.

The group hopes to increase awareness of the importance of the water and gain support for protecting our waters. Participants are welcome to join the walk at any point throughout the day. Transportation will be available along the route. For more information or to volunteer or donate food, contact Maria Maybee at (716) 200-8320.

Water is Life.

Gardening for Monarch Butterflies and Other Pollinators
The decline of the monarch butterfly has been traced to habitat loss, herbicides, and pesticides. Home gardening, especially with native plants, can provide much-needed safe havens for these iconic butterflies to feed on nectar, breed, and lay their eggs.

On Saturday, April 22 from 11am to 12:30pm, the public is invited to attend a presentation at the Arcade Free Library by Donna Barski, volunteer naturalist with Buffalo Audubon, and Ellen Folts, owner of Amanda’s Native Perennials.

Attendees will find out about the current status of monarch butterflies and will learn how to garden with native wildflowers in order to attract beneficial insects.

Milkweed seeds will be available free to participants! You can purchase a copy of Doug Tallamy’s book, Bringing Nature Home, for only $10. Perennial wildflowers, including common and swamp milkweed, will also be available for purchase.

Seating is limited. Please call (585) 492-1297 to sign up by Tuesday, April 18.
