A big night for salamanders, a living shoreline, and more…

A Big Night for Salamanders

At 7 pm on Thursday, February 23rd, the Land Conservancy is hosting a special talk with Twan Leenders, President of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and expert herpetologist at Grand Island Town Hall. Each spring, salamanders have a “big night” where they all—that’s right, all of them at once—come out of their forest homes and migrate back to the seasonal woodland pools where they were born. They breed at these same pools. Come find out more about these quiet but amazing creatures and how we can help with their survival. The presentation is free to the public, but registration is requested: https://abignightforsalamanders.eventbrite.com

Living Shorelines at the Stella Niagara Preserve
This year, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is working with us to do something very special at the Stella Niagara Preserve. They received a grant from Empire State Development’s Yahoo Community Fund to create a living shoreline at the landing. Together, we will be adding aquatic native plants and creating new habitat for fish, frogs, and turtles. We will also create a space for kayak access, which will make it easier for visitors to launch from Stella.

Come with us to the Ithaca Native Landscape Symposium
The 9th Annual Native Landscape Symposium is scheduled for March 10th and 11th in Ithaca, NY. This year’s theme is Landscape Fundamentals in a Changing World and presentations will focus on the role of native species in our landscapes, and how native plants, birds, pollinators, landscapes and environments are doing in our dynamic and rapidly changing world. Many of our staff and our members have […]

Restore the Gorge, fundraising updates, and more…

Did you see the article about our “Restore the Gorge” project on the cover of The Buffalo News last week?

This will be one of the most significant projects in the Land Conservancy’s history – a nearly $1 million effort to restore the forests of the Niagara Gorge. The gorge is not only part of one of the earth’s natural wonders and an international tourist attraction, it is incredibly ecologically diverse. Unfortunately, invasive plant species have been harming the gorge and its native plants and wildlife. The “Restore the Gorge” project will remove invasive plants and replace them with native plants. The project was also mentioned as a priority by Governor Cuomo in his State of the State Address at UB this past week!

We couldn’t have gotten here without the support of the Niagara River Greenway and the Greenway Ecological Standing Committee who are funding this project. The NYS Environmental Protection Fund and the Land Trust Alliance helped spur our conservation work along the Niagara River, as well as New York’s newly adopted Open Space Plan has helped guide this work.

Protected Forever: The Owens Falls Sanctuary

The Land Conservancy is now the official owner of The Owens Falls Sanctuary! Thank you for all you’ve done this year to save this incredible place. By protecting places like Owens Falls all of nature’s benefits, like clean air and water, are safeguarded for humankind and wildlife alike. We owe the success of this project to you!

However, the preserve is not yet open to the public. We still have a lot to do, including developing a trail system and determining where visitors will park their vehicles and enter the property. We know you’re excited to visit, but we appreciate your patience as we work to open the preserve. In the meantime, please check our events web page and future email blasts for guided tours of the property!

A New Project in the Niagara Gorge

We just received word that we will be able to restore wildlife habitat in the Niagara Gorge starting next year. The Gorge is one of the most important places in the world for plants and animals and this is our chance to help restore this natural wonder.

The Greenway Ecological Standing Committee has agreed to fund the project, which will include wildlife habitat restoration work, invasive species removal, and adding native plants. We will bring in landscape designers Darrell Morrison and Nancy Aten, who designed the Stella Niagara Preserve, create a new grassland overlooking the gorge. Stay tuned for updates in the coming year…
